Have you ever experienced a strong summer storm with heavy rain, numerous lightning strikes, and reduced visibility? As we are often on the road ourselves, we have witnessed such poor driving conditions many times. Below are some ideas on how to better cope with driving in unfavorable circumstances.

Lately, we have been increasingly witnessing severe storms accompanied by heavy rain, wind, lightning, and even hail. In such circumstances, drivers face reduced visibility, increased rainfall on the road, and other hazards. When we cannot avoid the storm, always remember to:

  • Adjust driving speed according to the conditions, especially due to the amount of precipitation.
  • Ensure that our vehicle is clearly visible; never forget to turn on the lights if they do not turn on automatically.
  • If traveling with children or elderly people, reassure them with appropriate, but not overly loud music or conversation.
  • If cruise control is on, deactivate it.
  • Strictly observe the safety distance.
  • There is a lot of rain on the windshield, so reduce speed, and be even more attentive to other traffic participants, especially pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
  • Lightning is a common occurrence during storms; we are generally safe in the vehicle (the car acts as a Faraday cage).

During a storm, never drive with open windows and a lowered roof, no matter how fun it may sound. Before driving, always consider whether our vehicle is suitable for challenging conditions. Always keep enough fuel in the tank and a mandatory first aid kit. If the rain is extremely heavy, if thick hail is falling, and visibility is zero, stop at the first suitable place, turn on all four hazard lights, and do not leave the car. Before that, safely use a radar app to check precipitation radar images or turn on the radio, where we can get basic information about current weather conditions.

However, during a storm, never do this:

  • Stop under overpasses, in tunnels, and under trees (especially when it is windy).
  • Never drive into standing water unless we know its depth.
  • Do not leave the vehicle unless absolutely necessary.

In extreme circumstances, always call the emergency center (112) and ensure the health and safety of ourselves and the people and animals with us.

We wish you a safe drive!
