In September, the first school day of the 2018/2019 school year begins. We received a meaningful letter from a young student, highlighting the dangers in road traffic. In hopes that its content will reach as many people as possible, we are sharing it in full.

“Dear adults and all drivers! School has started again, which means there will be more of us on the roads than during the summer. We are back, some of us from holidays at the sea, others from the mountains, and some stayed at home. There are many children, and we are all still playful. Full of impressions, we are stepping into the new school year, and although we almost know how to behave correctly in road traffic, we are still just children. We are playful and often unpredictable. Our paths cross, as schools (and kindergartens) are in your neighborhood and along the roads where you drive to work, home, the store, and other errands. Please watch out for us because sometimes we cannot manage it on our own.

Be especially careful around schools, kindergartens, pedestrian crossings, intersections, and areas with poor visibility. Pay particular attention to the small yellow scarves that some of us will be wearing. Older siblings, parents, teachers, and police officers will help us, but careful driving by adults is still crucial for preventing accidents.

Please also set a good example for us, as we will soon grow up and need to look out for those younger than us, especially on and around the roads.”
